Maternity package or baby gift: what do you give?

A baby has been born and you want to give a gift. Great! But what? A small stuffed animal, something practical, or perhaps a complete gift set? We hear this question often in the shop, and usually the answer comes from a few simple questions.

Gift set or individual gift?

A gift set is a present that has already been put together, or one that you assemble yourself. This is handy if you are short on time or are not sure what to choose. Assemble it yourself in our gift set and baby shower configurator: you filter by category, choose color and quantity, and add everything to your shopping cart at once.

An individual baby gift gives you more freedom. You can choose something that suits the parents, the vibe of their home, or the baby's name. Look at baby & kids for inspiration.

Both can work well. A set is a safe choice; an individual gift often feels more personal.

Three questions to start with

1. How well do you know the parents? If you know them well, you can choose something personal. If you don't know them as well, a neutral color and a universal gift are safer.
2. Is it the first baby? Parents of a first child often have little at home yet. With a second or third child, there is usually already plenty, and something small and special is nicer than getting the same thing again.
3. When are you giving it? For a maternity visit or baby shower just before or after the birth, something that can be used immediately is nice.

Ideas for the baby

• A soft cuddly toy or something to snuggle with. Check the packaging for the age recommendation.
• Textiles, such as a blanket or a cloth. Neutral colors suit almost any nursery.
• Clothing: newborn babies grow fast, so it is better to choose a size larger than the smallest one.
• Something for the nursery, if you know the decor. On our Little Dutch page, you will find baby and children's products.

Don't forget the parents

The first few weeks revolve around the baby, but the parents are often tired and deserve something. A candle, a card with a sweet message, or something for the home makes a maternity gift extra personal. View the selection under candles and fragrances. Do keep in mind that candles require attention when there is a baby in the house: place them in a safe spot and only light them when someone is present.

Practical tips

• Ask if there is a wish list. That prevents duplicate gifts.
• Choose washable items. Everything a baby wears or touches is washed often.
• Pay attention to the age recommendation on toys and the size for clothing.
• Keep maternity visits short. Parents of a newborn need rest most of all.
• Think of a big brother or sister. A small gift for them is a sweet gesture.
