Amethyst in your home: how to choose a beautiful geode
An amethyst geode immediately draws attention. From the outside, it looks like a rough, gray stone, but inside is a cavity full of purple crystals that catch the light. Place one in your home, and it will quickly become the piece that visitors ask about. But how do you choose one that suits you and your home? We’ll guide you through the questions we hear most often in the shop.
What actually is an amethyst geode?
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. A geode is a stone with a hollow interior in which crystals have grown. In an amethyst geode, that interior is lined with purple points, sometimes fine and densely packed, sometimes large and irregular. No two geodes are the same. That makes choosing fun, and also very personal.
Start with the size
The first question is where the stone will be placed. A small geode fits on a windowsill, a bookshelf, or a side table. A large specimen on a stand demands its own spot on the floor, for example in a corner of the living room or in the hallway.
- Measure the space before you start looking. Consider height, width, and depth.
- Think about the weight. A geode is solid stone and a large piece is heavy. Place it on a sturdy surface.
- Leave space around it. A geode looks its best when it isn't crowded by other items.

Look closely at the color
Amethyst ranges from very light lilac to deep dark purple. What is beautiful is a matter of taste. A light stone looks soft and airy; a dark stone is more pronounced. Also, pay attention to how even the color is and how the crystals shimmer. It is best to view photos in daylight, as purple can look different under a lamp.
With or without a stand
Large geodes are often placed on a stand. This allows the stone to stand firmly and upright, letting you look straight into the cavity. Smaller geodes can also simply lie flat or stand against a wall. When ordering, feel free to ask if a stand is included or possible. We always discuss large pieces and special requests in consultation.
A good spot in the house
Place your geode in a spot where it is safe and gets nice light, but not in bright sunlight. Amethyst can eventually fade due to excessive direct sunlight. Soft daylight or a lamp shining on it at an angle makes the crystals light up beautifully. If you have children or pets at home, choose a spot where the stone cannot be knocked over.
How to keep it looking beautiful
- Dust it off with a soft brush or a dry, soft cloth. A brush is better for getting between the crystals.
- Keep the stone out of bright sunlight so the color stays vibrant.
- Always move a large geode with two hands, or with two people.
