A day in Gouda, cheese market, souvenirs and shopping
Gouda is more than cheese. The town has a beautiful market square, a famous church and plenty of small shops. Here is an easy plan for a day in Gouda, with a stop at our shop for a souvenir or a gift to take home.
Start at the Markt
The Markt is the heart of the old town. You will see the town hall and the Waag (the old weigh house), which now houses a cheese and crafts museum. In front of the Waag you will find the Gouda cheese market, on Thursday mornings from April to August, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. Farmers trade their cheese by clapping hands, the traditional way. Dates can change, so check the official tourist information before you go.
Visit the Sint-Janskerk
The Sint-Janskerk (St. John's Church) is right next to the Markt. It is known for its large stained-glass windows, and it is worth a visit even if you only have a short time.
Try cheese and stroopwafels
Gouda is known for its cheese and its stroopwafels. You will find several cheese shops and bakeries around the Markt. We are not a food shop, so for tasting and buying cheese, have a look around the square.
Shop in the Wijdstraat
A short walk from the Markt you will find Huisje 44 at Wijdstraat 4. It is a small, warm home and gift shop where you can take your time to look, smell and touch. You will find scented candles from WoodWick and Bridgewater, silk flowers, home accessories, sterling silver rings with real gemstones and baby gifts. We speak English, and everything you buy is gift wrapped for free.
Souvenirs from Gouda that are not cheese
Looking for a souvenir that travels well? A scented candle, a small vase, a silk flower or a piece of silver jewelry is easy to pack. Tell Marvin, the owner, who the souvenir or gift is for and he will help you choose. Prefer not to carry it? You can also order online and have it shipped within the Netherlands. Living abroad? Ask us about the options.
Gift ideas for every budget
Not sure what to take home? Here are a few ideas. A WoodWick scented candle with a wooden wick that crackles softly is a lovely small gift, starting at about 14 euros. A leather tray or coasters from Chamada make a beautiful gift for a home. A sterling silver ring with a gemstone is a personal souvenir, and every ring in the shop is unique and adjustable. For little ones, take a look at the soft toys from Little Dutch. And if you cannot decide, a gift card starting at 10 euros lets the receiver choose.
Take your time. The shop is small and warm, and you are welcome to smell the candles and look around without any rush.
